The Roma ladies returned to League action for the first time in almost a month. Roma played two Champions League games and got themselves into the quarterfinals and they played The round of 16 in the Copa Italia getting to the quarterfinals there as well. However, the last time they played a league match they lost to Juventus who narrowed the gap to just three points at the top of the table. Roma still had the momentum of the season ahead of them needing to win out. If they're able to do so, the league title could still be lifted. However, pressure, all of a sudden was rising at the top of the table. Experience was going to come through. The performance against Juventus on December 11th left something to be desired as it was one of their only bad performances this season. On Saturday they traveled to Florence to take on Fiorentina. They had played earlier this season in a very close to one victory for Roma. They scored a winner in the final 25 minutes to beat Fiorentina in Rome. Florence has been one of the best teams in the league this season. They are near the top of the table still behind. Roma but they have been among the elite teams in Italy. They played Roma very tough in the first meeting and expected to do the same in a second. However could be different this time around. It turned out to be very different. The match was about to kick off in Florence as a first versus third one to battle Roma and Fiorentina One of the most critical fixtures on the league this season with the results certainly could take Roma one step closer to getting their hands on the trophy.
As I said in the first meeting, it was a grueling tough battle between two of the top teams in italy. This time around it started incredibly quick and fast for Roma. As they put themselves in the driver seat almost immediately. Roma ripped open fiorentina inside a 5 minutes. In the fourth minute down the left wing Roma captain bartoli found Valentina in the box who sees her initial strike. Save only for Alves to stick it in the net with ease as Roma take a 1-0 lead. They almost doubled their advantage a minute later as Valentina Giacinti got on the break almost by herself inside the box. Her initial strike is saved. She gets her head on the end of the rebound but goes over as Fiorentina can breathe again. Fiorentina broken down twice in the opening 5 minutes. It was becoming a disaster. Roma was absolutely pulverizing Fiorentina. The viola looked a shell of themselves from earlier in the season. Meanwhile, on the other side Roma the leg leaders were cooking and looking impossibly challenging to slow down. In the 16th minute it got worse. A cross was delivered into the box as Manuela Giuliano collected on her foot before calmly drilling the strike into the back of the net. Roma took a 2-0 lead. Roma has the best defense in Italy and the second-best attack. Fiorentina who gave him a little bit of trouble early in the season. Were already in a two-goal hole. It's highly possible that there wasn't a way back. Fiorentina were sloppy made mistakes all over the shop and couldn't do a thing to stop this. Roma. Roma broke them down and took advantage of them constantly. Roma was feasting in Florence, while Fiorentina couldn't find any sort of rhythm or confidence, they were being the moralized by the ruthless performance from the visitors. In the 23rd minute Glionna supplied across into Manuela Guliano. The initial strike is tipped by the goalkeeper. A flying head from the left side nearly could have tapped it in but Fiorentina able to escape the situation without worsening the score line. In the 31st minute Manuela Giuliano tried to pull up from distance, had the distance on it but was placed poorly as the goalkeeper manages to catch it. Roma continued to dominate and run circles around Fiorentina. At the end of the first half, they held on to a 2-0 lead with the points probably already secured.
Although Fiorentina we're putting together a horrendously damaging performance. They did manage to pull a goal back in the 47th minute even if it was luck of the Irish. A accidental cross coming from the tip of the box into the danger area, Caesar pushes it onto the crossbar. The follow-up was then saved again by the Romanian but on the third attempt Fiorentina manages to find the back of the net. It was now a one goal game. It was kind of hard to believe given the circumstances of the way Roma was playing and how easy Fiorentina we're making it. However, perhaps getting the goal back could ignite the performance and turn this into a game like it did the first time. However, it didn't last all that long. In the 54th minute, Roma got themselves a third. Bartoli supplied the ball for Valentina Giacinti. She takes it off her chest and she rips it at the goal. The goalkeeper It is deflected by the defense as Haavi comes on the left side to clean it up. Sending it into the back of the net as Roma. Take a 3-1 lead. A couple of chances followed with Roma continuing to dominate. Then it got to the point of embarrassment. In the 73rd minute Roman get on the counter attack across from the side. In the 84th minute young teenager Zara Kramžar collects then finishes to make it five. In the 90th minute Cinotti berries and strike from outside this area code into the bottom corner to make it six and a minute later. Manuela Giuliano scores again to make it seven. On the night Roma always was one step ahead and a class above as they put seven past Fiorentina in Florence as the lead leaders show the level between themselves and the rest. Juventus dropped a point thanks to Sassuolo's 16-year-old center back getting an equalizer and stoppage time. Roma now seem to be in cruise control as they stand five points clear at the top of the table. Roma take one step close to the trophy following a 7-1 victory.
This was an absolute goal scoring clinic from the league leaders. Roma had been pushing all season as it has been the season of historical landmarks. This was the first Champions League campaign they got through the group into the quarterfinals. In the league. They have been the best team from the very beginning of the season. They have the best defense in the league and the second most dangerous attack. The acquisitions that they made in the summer has made a huge difference. Not to mention the levels of the individuals that help this team qualify for the Champions League last season have progressed massively in their own right. Roma missed out on the league title by just four points. Last season. They went on a huge unbeaten run this season and have only lost three games in all competitions. They now appear to be the overwhelmingly favorite to secure the league title. They have progressed in the cup as well and are slowly developing themselves as a superpower in woman's football. They are unequivocally a top 10 team in the world as they have been a class above. Almost anyone else they have played. Even though they have two losses against Juventus, they performed admirably and both of their performances. They beat them in the Super Cup so take that away. The only other team that has beaten them is European superpower Wolfsburg. They are the team to beat and rightfully so with another incredible performance. Fiorentina should be absolutely ashamed and embarrassed by the margin of which they lost. The viola come into this game third in the league. In the first meeting it was a true battle. Yet on Saturday afternoon it was embarrassment. Roma scored seven now they can do this against lower teams in the league but to do this against one of the elite teams in the league speaks volumes What makes matters even worse for Fiorentina Valentina didn't even score. She's arguably the best player in the league and one of the top two goal scoring threats in Italian football. Roma scored seven and she didn't get one. They dominated this game from the beginning. The girls in purple never had a chance to do anything. Once Roma started as hot as they did, there was no answer for any of it. Now Roma have a very important last couple weeks. A meeting with Inter Milan and Sassuolo could very well determine the title. If Roma beat everyone else in front of them, they will conquer the league title. Juventus has been wildly inconsistent this season and now have five points to make up. Juventus needs help and needs Roma to not collect maximum points. If Roma beats what is in front of them, they will end this season with the trophy in their hands. This has been a historical season for Roma who want to add another trophy the most important trophy to their trophy cabinet. They have been a ruthless well-oiled machine with a combination of youth and experience. This is what has made them so dangerous and the only thing left to do is take care of business and win the title. No one can stop them but themselves. They are one step closer to their immortality with an absolute goal clinic in Florence.
