Just 8 minutes from St. Peters cathedral we are at the Weserstadion for a vital clash early in this Bundesliga season. As Werder Bremen host FSV Mainz in hopes of ending their drought to start the season. Bremen and FSV Mainz have shot nothing but blanks. One of these sides hopes they will collect max points for the first time this season. Werder Bremen have had a hectic beginning. They were bounced from the German cup in the first round to third division side, Viktoria Koln. They then got pumped in Bundesliga opener at home against Bayern Munich. Despite keeping it relatively close. Bayern Munich scored three goals in the last 20 minutes to ultimately take them to the shredder taking a 4-0 defeat. Last weekend they took a trip to Europa Park station to battle Freiburg. Although they were out played, they were on the verge of grabbing a point against one of the top sides in the Bundesliga only for Maximilian Phillip to crush a 90th minute winner into the bottom corner as they tasted defeat again. This week matters have even gotten worse. On top of losing their opening, the matches of the season. Last season top scorer Nicholas Füllkrug departed as the 29-year-old that led the league with 16 goals secured a 16 million move to Borussia Dortmund in the final hours of the transfer window. Leaving Werder without a reliable goal scorer. Meanwhile for FSV Mainz hasn’t been quite as bad but hasn’t been great either. After finishing 9th and back to back seasons. The side that wrecked Dortmund’s title last season registering just a point in their opening to game to the season. After winning in the cup they got humiliated by Union Berlin in Berlin. Then last weekend They had three points in their grasp at home against Einract Frankfurt. Jae Sung Lee’s first half goal was canceled out by a 92nd second minute equalizer from Omar mamouche as Mainz sees maximum points slip through their fingers. Both sides looking to make a statement as we had into our first international break of the new season. Its Werder its Mainz. 41,000 in attendance here at the Weserstadion in Bremen. Can Bremen thrive without Füllkrug and bag their first one of the season. Or does FSV Mainz still have that spark from last season. Let’s find out kick off Next.
A sea of green surround Weserstadion. The supporters with the intention making it a difficult environment for the visitors from Rhine. A sense of desperation on the faces of the Werder Bremen players as the intrigue began. Bremen got off to the races almost immediately. Right after a promising opening chance by Bremen. The hosts would have a magnificent opportunity to take an early lead. In the 3rd minute Andreas Hanche-Olsen brings down Marvin Ducksch in the box. The referee pointed to the spot immediately. The poor defensive display give Bremen a golden chance to take the lead. Marvin Ducksch stepped up as he sends a strike into the bottom corner from 12 yards out. Bremen takes a 1-0 lead inside of 5 minutes.
Without a win thus far this season that is exactly what was needed from Bremen with a quick start, providing them with a magnificent opportunity to take some points, but then again things just started. FSV Mainz put together a swift reply after the opening goal. South Korea playmaker Jae Sung Lee looks to make something happen as he delivers the ball into Karim Onisiwo the Austrian tests his range from distance had the distance on it, but it glides wide at the end. FSV Mainz has underperformed to start the new campaign. However, there's no denying the qualities that they have in their team. Coming from behind. They do have it in them to pull it back. However Bremen wasn't going to make it easy. Bremen displayed the attacking institution in their own right. Marvin Ducksch making things happen through the air as he supplies a headed pass towards stash his strike glides to the corner with a goalkeeper manages to get his hands on. It was beginning to feel a little back and forth. Both teams in desperate need of points It's been fairly active early on. FSV Mainz one themselves a corner the visitors looked to find the Austrian again glide through the air getting his hand on the end of it but can't quite manage to get the equalizer. Another good touch from him though. If the visitors keep up the intensity and create these types of chances for themselves, they could find a way back in. After Jen's stash swipe from distance is blocked by the opposing defense. FSV Mainz got a pair of chances for themselves as their playmakers continue to put pressure on the Bremen defense. Karim took a stab at it from close range Robin Zentner makes the safe denying the Austrian once again. Mere moments later Jae Sung Lee makes a brilliant run near to the side of the box. The South Korean tries to lift it into the corner as he hits it on the curler. Robin Zentner has to go well out of his way but does manage to get on it. A mere equalizer for the South Korean. It began to be back and forth at one stage as we got later into the first half. Bremen get on the counter attack as they push the ball into the dangerous areas. Schmid had a chance to send it through the net but ended up putting far too much power on it. Bremen very easily. Could have killed the game off then and there. On a set piece The visitors found themselves in a dangerous position. The free kick was directed into the box Kohr got his head on the end of it but it drifted. On another free kick a moment later Lee catches. It couldn't quite direct it properly. For a stretch it felt like the visitors were pushing for the equalizer. It could have been around the corner the way they were pressurizing the opposition. Bremen we're feeling the effects of the support multiple times. They tried to infiltrate the defense for a second goal but Robin zetner was there again. In the closing minutes of the first half. Dawid Kownacki through a headed pass as it glides to the left. After the opening 45 minutes Bremen find themselves in front thanks to a penalty from Marvin Ducksch in the third minute that separates the difference in what has been a very end-to-end first half in Bremen.
Bremen still holding on to their lead. Although they find themselves in front. It was a fairly competitive first half. Both teams somewhat desperate of points at this part of the season. A lot can change but these points up for grabs this afternoon will be incredibly valuable to whoever gets them. Incredibly evenly matched. Each side having their moments. However, in the second half they're began a huge shift towards the hosts. Less than 10 minutes into the second half. Bremen found their moment and capitalized. In the 53rd minute, Mitchell Weiser delivered a ball into the box Jens Stage positioned himself in a dangerous position before following through with his head with vengeance. It was a bullet of a header searing through the corner. No goalkeeper was capable of saving that. I'm surprised it didn't leave a gashing hole in the corner. Bremen take control of the match all of a sudden now holding a 2-0 lead at home.
FSV Mainz had all their momentum drained out. Just as they were pushing for that equalizer the rug is pulled out from underneath them. Now a monument is challenge. Sitting in front of them to try to turn this around was going to be incredibly difficult. While Bremen feeling completely energized. They continued to push and look for another. Amos piper on a set piece tries to find the corner but put a little too much on it as it coasts. A near moment later Anthony Jung supplies a ball into the box for David Kowalski's, leading with his head but the ball drifts wide. The host remained in control with their first points of the season on the line. Amos Piper gave it another go on another free kick. He gets into the attacking area sores with his head but a little off once again. For the most part, Bremen maintain their control as they wanted to keep the game within their own hands. They dragged it all the way down to the last 10 minutes. With a two goal lead. Nothing to worry about. Just hold on for victory. However, in the closing moments of the match. They exploded! In the 82nd minute Justin Nijnmah led the attack as they got on the counter. He dumped it off to Leonardo bidencourt before he drilled a strike into the bottom corner from the left side of the box. Bremen took a 3-0 lead. 1 minute later it happened again. In the 83rd minute they got on the break once more. This time it was schmid supplying Justin Nijnmah as the former Dortmund talent took it forward before sending it into the bottom corner. All of a sudden Bremen opened up a four goal lead. The final whistle goes at the Weserstadion. As Bremen taste their first victory of the season. Even without Nicholas Fullkrug they deliver here on a Saturday afternoon and what was much needed Victor. Meanwhile FSV Mainz are falling apart in front of our eyes in the early stage of the season. It's all smiles at Weserstadion as they bag their first win of the season.
The Bundesliga season has just begun. Yet Bremen found themselves in a very difficult scenario already. They came into the match on Saturday afternoon knowing what needed to be done. There was a sense of desperation even . 0 points so far this season. They have also not scored either. To make matters worse, they lost their top goal scorer in the final hours of the transfer window. Bremen having to coexist with what they got. They very well may have a difficult season. This campaign. However, at home against the side that has struggled just as much was a golden opportunity for them to take advantage and get a necessary result. Another lost toppled on top of the three they've already dealt with was going to be a recipe for disaster. Bremen understood the assignment. You could see the sense of desperation on the face of the players. Fully aware of what they needed to do on Saturday. They passed with flying colors. They came out incredibly aggressive winning themselves a penalty in the opening minutes. Marvin Ducksch delivered from the spot. Putting them in a primal position. It was a bit back and forth between themselves and Mainz another side just as desperate for points. It was a bit end to end. However, from top to bottom, Bremen did a fantastic job of dealing with undesirable circumstances. While they struggle that times to keep Jason Lee quiet. They managed to persevere through it. Even though he had his moments once Bremen took control They weren't giving the game back. A bullet header had them with a two goal lead. They sat on it, manage the game and got there in the end. Two goals in the last 10 minutes as Mainz feeling of total collapse. The challenges and difficulties will not fade. I expect them to have to deal with a lot of adversity this season. Especially with their striker and now gone. It puts a lot of pressure on Marvin Ducksch to be that guy for them. However. Bremen showed this evening that they have others that can also show up in contribute in a big way. This was absolutely necessary for them. Well deserving of the 3 points. It is only the beginning but after not scoring in their opening three games. They score four this evening as it should give them the exact type of confidence they need. It was an overall collective and well structured performance. In front of their fans they delivered what they needed. On the other side of the coin FSV Mainz has been one of the most puzzling teams so far in this early Bundesliga season. They didn't lose anybody significant. Yet they seem to be a mess. At the moment they have secured two consecutive top 10 finishes. They have finished 9th and back to back season. This is the same team that Dortmund couldn't deal with on the last match day of the season. They have so many incredible individuals that can become a problem for many. Jae Sung Lee among them. However, they got absolutely schooled by Union Berlin. They had a lead for the majority of their match last weekend against Frankfurt only for the super eagles to score and stop his time. Then on top of that they come in here today. Defensive errors allows an early penalty. They come on strong in the first half and then in the second half they get absolutely punched in the throat. The second Bremen scored their second goal we saw mental instability in their performance. Their first shot in the second half came with 10 minutes to go. They couldn't make anything happen and really struggled once again. Now they have one of the best playmakers in the league. They have a top manager that has done a tremendous job with them. Overall, their squad is more than balanced enough to be doing better than they are. There certainly is a level of concern. One could attribute during this start. 1 out of a possible 9 to start the season. FSV Mainz can be one of the most dynamic teams in the league. At their best they can be a problem for anyone. Right now it seems they can't get out of their own way. Truly a concerning vibe from them. They'll be at home next week, hopefully turning it around. Meanwhile, Bremen complete the mission here today and secure maximum points. No Füllkrug No problem? Perhaps not, but they finally get their season off the ground.
